Preparing for Ihram
Before starting the Umrah pilgrimage, physical and spiritual preparation is necessary.
1. Physical Preparation
- Clip nails and perform personal grooming.
- Perform Ghusl (ritual bath); if not possible, perform Wudu.
- Men put on the 'Izar' and 'Rida' (two-piece white Ihram garments). Women wear simple, modest everyday clothes.
2. Ihram Prayer & Intention
- Perform two rakats of 'Ihram Prayer' (unless it's a disliked time).
- After prayer, make the intention:
'O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah for Your sake. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.'
3. Talbiyah
After intention, begin reciting the Talbiyah:
- 'Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā šarīka laka labbayk, innal-ḥamda wan-niʿmata laka wal-mulk, lā šarīka lak.'
- (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise, favor, and sovereignty are Yours. You have no partner.)
Note: Once in Ihram, specific prohibitions apply.
